Propriocetion-Finally Getting Attention

The term proprioception is being thrown around a lot lately, in fact a recent news station discussed its importance to athletes. Proprioception is the ability of your central nervous system to communicate and coordinate parts of your body with each other. An example would be touching your finger to your ear. How does your finger know where to find your ear? We are all born with proprioceptors in our body, the problem is that we don't train them or develop them.

Think of surgical gloves for a moment. Why are the gloves designed this way, as opposed to winter mittens? The answer is obvious, the gloves allow the surgeon to feel every movement in your body while performing surgery. If something changes, they have to be able to feel it instantly and react.

Sports are played at an incredibly fast pace and an athlete needs to be able to process information and react instantly. If an athlete's proprioceptors are not trained then their reaction time is delayed.

What are the benefits of training your proprioceptors?

It increases a football players speed because it helps to improve reaction time .
If you are an MMA fighter, your punching power and speed can improve because your reaction time is quicker.
A baseball player looking to throw faster or increase bat speed will need to train their proprioceptors.

How do you train your body to react quicker, how do you train your proprioceptors? It's starts by taking off your shoes and training in your bare feet. Let your body become familiar with the ground.
