shoulder impingement

I am a mma fighter, I have been having shoulder problems for a while. I finally got an mri, which indicated that I have a shoulder impingement. I was told shoulder rehab will not help my injury because the bottom part of my acromion is pushing on my rotator muscles and causing pain and range of motion problems. Do you have any advice? I feel surgury may be my only choice.

Re: shoulder impingement
Nick might be right. Except for me it is the opposite. I have to constantly train my shoulder internal rotators on the left arm. If I do that, I am fine. But if I skip 5 or 6 days and don't train the internal rotators, my shoulder starts hurting again. Experiment doing internal rotators for a couple days vs doing external rotators for a couple of days. See what makes your shoulder feel more stable and pain free the next day or so.
I got the idea to try this from the ssl website a few months ago and I figured it out for myself. It has worked for me.
Keep in mind, I am not a therapist though. I'm just trying to share how I went about it.
Re: shoulder impingement
really work on strenthening the muscles around the scapula. LIke the lower traps and romboids, serratus anterior/posterior. Concentrate on keeping the shoulder blade down and back before moving the arm. This willl drop the accromomion and will help decrease friction on the rotator cuff.
Re: shoulder impingement
nothing is torn, but I was told that if my rotator cuff continues to rub against my acromium it will tear. I feel this is true because when I move my shoulder I have pain and that is from the friction that is occurring. On my mri I have scar tissue on my acromium that is rubbing on my rotator cuff, that is why I have pain when I move my shoulder. Any more advice will be appreciated.
Re: shoulder impingement
have to balance out your shoulder muscles, chances are you internal rotators are overpowering the external rotators. stay away from pressing for a while and work on strengthening the smaller external rotators, infraspinatus and teres minor. The ballistic ball workout will help pull the shoulder into place. Aquainetics will help no doubt, going easier on the internal movements and focus more on the external rotating movements.
Re: shoulder impingement
I was intrigued until he said that you have to do this day in and day out. I can see it having a benefit for degenerate hip and other things but it won't take the place of a specific adjustment. Plus, I'd like to correct the problem in a lot less time and send them on their way. And lastly, I in my opinion i haven't seen anything that helps posture more than SSL training methods.
Re: shoulder impingement
find a egoscue therapist they do online therapy www.egoscue.com it is postural therapy
Re: shoulder impingement
I help a lot of people with shoulder problems with adjustment techniques. I'm a chiropractor. I use other things to support it like low level laser and Kenieso Tex taping methods. Look into finding someone maybe that can offer that in your area. Where are you at? I might know someone. Surgery is obviously the last option. My concern is the same as Danial's, if nothing is torn or there is no arthritic condition, I wouldn't be thinking surgery.
Re: shoulder impingement
Is anything torn? what kind of pain free range of motion do you have?
