Pilates Reformer

When I took my son to train with Gavin, I remember seeing a reformer. Is that piece of equipment being used in the traditional pilates method ? Or as a different tool?

Thanks,
Lance

Re: Pilates Reformer

ummm well he used it to hold my explosive nature back a bit and focus on my for to teach my body to fire right and the proper sequence not just fire and it's very similar to the bungee jumps but it had to do with my foot exploding re-firing and meeting at the highest point Gavin can only elaborate on that

Re: Pilates Reformer

Thanks John, I am interested any info we can get. When I received the ball workout dvd I noticed some of the movements were similar to pilates. SSL have changed the movement in many ways. If I am helping someone with an injury I use the water workout, or use ball movements in a much more controlled manner. The movements are done slowly until they can be performed in a smooth stable manner without pain. Only then do I start to speed up the exercises. If Gavin has a different protocol, I would love to hear it. I actually always use the smooth /stable progression with everyone I work with. Interested in some good input. Oh, I am pretty sure Gavin has a systematic approach to training, and just not throwing new exercises at someone.
Thanks

Re: Pilates Reformer

no he uses modified pilates movements and his own and there is no such thing as slow in SSL you start slowly and gradually increase the gauge no movement is ever slow, and you can't really pick Gavin's brain he always throws something new at you every day he always coming up with new things, he uses the reformer more as a way to teach to move in fire in a proper sequence, I remember I had a hard time with using the super cat the right way so he made me get on the pilates reformer to fire off in the right sequence, but he uses it in many ways a lot for the hips glute and core, and to teach proper firing sequence of the muscles

Re: Pilates Reformer

Is what Joshua describing very similar to bungee jumps off the side of the pool? Joshua, can you describe what gavin had you do a little more and maybe why? From what I understand it is the light resistance that allows proper firing sequence. Correct? Did you notice improvement from using the pilates machine that way? I do these in the pool but I only have access in the summer. so I'm trying to think of a substitute for pool bungee jumps during the winter. I like how the bungee jumps make my legs feel stonger and I feel I have more acceleration during my sprints.

Re: Pilates Reformer

Exactly John. I believe that's a pilates move, just much faster. We need to pick his brain, and see what other exercises he uses. I also really want to know if he used a slower version before the ballistic version ?
