Instability Disks: Newer, Smarter Tools For Athletic Performance Training

One of the major things that's missed in athletic performance training is the training of the feet. The feet are the transfer agent for all the force that is produced by the leg and stabilized by the spine; plus the feet are the only part of the body touching the ground.
Consequently, if the feet are ignored in athletic performance training, the trainee will not have proper range of motion of the ankle nor mobility of the ankle joint. This will result in suboptimal ankle and foot extension when running or jumping, severely limiting the ability to maximize speed, vertical leap, broad jump and overall athleticism.
The Instability Disks are a valuable tool for training this oft-ignored body part. Using the Instability Disks, an athlete can expect the following benefits:
- Increase strength & flexibility in the foot & ankle
- Increase in proprioception due to the large number of nerve endings & proprioceptors in the toes and bottom of the feet. We receive data about where we are in space, etc through the feet
- Provides optimal simultaneous stretching & strengthening for the ankle (aka: dynamic flexibility)
- Helps dramatically reduce common injuries...not just to the foot & ankle but the legs and knee as well since the stronger, better trained foot provides a more solid foundation for movement
- Teaches use of the ball of the foot and helps train proper foot angle, which is necessary to maximize speed, vertical jump, quickness, etc.
The primary benefit of performance training on the Instability Disks is a dramatic increase in the strength of the ankle and the foot. There are very few methods that can accomplish this; conventional training methods such as weight lifting provide almost zero benefit to one of our most important body parts. Coupled with our training regimin, the Sport Science Lab Instability Disks not only strengthen the foot and ankle, they strengthen it quickly, and throughout its entire range of motion.
To be able to maximize your sports performance level, you have to maximize the ability of your ankle and your foot. The Instability Disks provide proprioception. They provide strength. They provide stretching for the ankle and they do it in all different ranges of motion, an important point in injury reduction.
